Some decisions are reasonable.
Others make better stories.
Unser Boot hieß Fugarte – The Art to Escape.
Und wir müssen zugeben: We kind of like it.
Good food.
Cold drinks.
Warm nights.
Beautiful bays.
No rush.
Come as guests.
Stay as friends.
Leave as Capybaras.
Relaxed. Social. Slightly sunburned.
Good times.
Good karma.
And always a safe return.
The Art to Escape was yesterday.
This is the Art to Stay.

Some decisions make perfect sense.
The best ones make better stories.
We started out as sailors — and Gerrit, at heart, always will be. For years, our summers were spent under sail, guided by wind, weather, and the firm belief that an engine was mainly there to help you leave the harbor again.
Our boat was called Fugarte — The Art to Escape. In hindsight, the name could hardly have been more appropriate.
And then, in what may have been a temporary lapse of judgment — and almost certainly a departure from a few deeply held sailing principles — we bought a 65-foot motor yacht.
Well.
Sea La Vie.
These days, we move through the bays of Croatia at considerably less of an angle — with considerably more space, comfort, and ice in our glasses. And, much to our own surprise, we have to admit: We rather like it.
Our new home on the water is a Monte Carlo Yacht. A little retro. A touch extravagant. Distinctly different. And entirely uninterested in going unnoticed.
Her name is CAPYBARA. Yes. Like the animal. A large, remarkably relaxed, semi-aquatic rodent. Perhaps not the obvious name for a 65-foot yacht. Which is exactly the point.
Capybaras are peaceful, easygoing, and wonderfully social. They love the water, seem to get along with absolutely everyone, and possess the enviable ability to move through life as though there really isn't all that much to worry about. A philosophy we found surprisingly convincing.
Because, when all is said and done, this is what CAPYBARA is about:
Good food.
Cold drinks.
Warm nights.
Beautiful bays.
No rush.
CAPYBARA was not made for hurry. She was made for friends and family — and for people who step aboard as guests and, somewhere between the first swim and the second bottle of wine, forget that they ever were.
For breakfast at anchor in a Croatian bay whose name nobody quite remembers. For "just one quick sundowner." For evenings that quietly turn into nights. For conversations that could never have been planned. For music drifting across the water. For laughter, bare feet, salt on sun-warmed skin. And for those rare, wonderfully uncomplicated days when the most important question is: Which bay tomorrow?
That is why this book exists. Leave something of yourself behind. A story. A thought. An inside joke. A small indiscretion — within reason. A piece of questionable advice. Or simply the memory of one of those seemingly ordinary days that somehow became unforgettable.
Because one day, we may forget the names of all the places where we dropped anchor. But hopefully never the people we shared them with.
Come as guests.
Stay as friends.
Leave as Capybaras.
Relaxed. Social. Slightly sunburned.
And may CAPYBARA always remain true to her name: calm and easygoing, even when the sea has other ideas. May she carry us — and everyone who joins us along the way — safely through quiet bays and rough seas. May she look after us when the wind picks up, when the waves have plans of their own, and when the horizon feels a little farther away than expected. And after every adventure, may she always bring us safely home.
Because we believe that what you send out into the world has a way of finding its way back. So with CAPYBARA, we choose to send out the good stuff:
Good times.
Good karma.
And always a safe return.
The Art to Escape was yesterday.
This is the Art to Stay.
